10 Antibiotics That Will Treat Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a group of conditions affecting the prostate gland including acute bacterial infections to chronic pain disorders. Symptoms also vary, and patients can expect urinary obstruction, fever, myalgias, low sex drive or impotence, painful ejaculation, and low-back pain. Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis is usually treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. When the infection is bacterial-caused, antibiotic treatments are required for up to several months. A number of antibiotics are available based on individual diagnoses.

10. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, or Bactrim, is used to treat prostatitis-related infections such as E. coli, Proteus spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other Enterobacteriaceae, including Klebsiella pneumonia, Enterobacter cloacae, and Serratia marcescens. It effectively works on such infections because of its active penetration to the prostate. It is not used as well for prostatitis resulting from Staphylococcus spp. or Enterococcus spp. Infections. Users must be aware of blood and skin reactions and colitis.

9. Doxycycline

Doxycycline can effectively eliminate infections and is used as one of the most common tetracycline antibiotics for treating acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis. It is available in both tablet and powder form for injection. Although it comes with a lengthy list of side effects, they are typically easily dealt with, such as nausea and vomiting. Further warnings include mild diarrhea which could lead to fatal colitis. The growth of fungi and other organisms is also possible.
