For well over a decade, ADHD rates have been rising at about 5% a year, and there is still no definitive test to reach a diagnosis. That is even more true for children, for whom there are even fewer measures available for trying to make a clear-cut diagnosis. So what exactly is ADHD and are you at risk for developing it, or perhaps you already struggle with it? In this brief article, we will be providing you with a general ADHD overview to explore what ADHD is and how you may in turn be able to find treatment.

What is ADHD?

It is important to first address what precisely “Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” (ADHD) truly is. ADHD is the term for a group of behaviors that can be found in children and adults. Those struggling with ADHD often have difficulties focusing and they often note that even when they attempt to concentrate, they find it difficult to maintain their focus. Many with ADHD also find it difficult to organize things, listen to instructions, remember pertinent details and simply control their behavior. These challenges all too often lead to issues in terms of getting along with others at home, school or in the workplace.

ADHD In Children

Children may be far more active and impulsive than what is typical behavior for their age group. These behaviors can in turn contribute to a number of significant problems in relationships, learning and behavior. For this very reason, children who have ADHD are often seen as being "difficult" or as having behavioral issues.

At this juncture, there is not a significant amount of information regarding adult ADHD; the vast majority of previous studies and all the latest news stories have involved how ADHD affects children. Oftentimes adults who have ADHD are diagnosed soon after they find that their children have been diagnosed with ADHD, which is leading many researchers to ponder if in fact, this health problem may be hereditary.
