Prediabetes can begin to impact vision well before diabetes is diagnosed. Chronically high blood sugar levels can damage the small blood vessels in the retina, leading to diabetic retinopathy. Though this condition is most commonly associated with type 2 diabetes, early retinal changes have been found in individuals with prediabetes. Warning signs include blurry vision, trouble seeing at night, or floaters. Regular eye exams are critical—even in prediabetic patients with no symptoms. Early intervention with lifestyle changes and glucose control can help prevent long-term vision loss.

8. Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly common in patients with prediabetes. This condition occurs when fat builds up in the liver in individuals who drink little to no alcohol. It’s strongly associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. NAFLD often has no symptoms until the liver becomes inflamed or scarred. Doctors may detect it through elevated liver enzymes or imaging tests. If left unchecked, NAFLD can progress to cirrhosis. Fortunately, lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and weight loss can reverse or significantly slow its progression.
