Emerging research suggests a link between prediabetes and cognitive impairment. Elevated blood sugar may increase inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, potentially contributing to memory issues or slowed thinking. Some studies also suggest a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or vascular dementia. While more research is ongoing, brain health is now considered part of the long-term complications landscape for prediabetic patients. Mental stimulation, glucose control, physical activity, and heart-healthy diets like the Mediterranean diet may help reduce this risk.

10. Increased Risk of Stroke

Prediabetes is a known risk factor for ischemic stroke, particularly when combined with high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels. Even without full-blown diabetes, elevated glucose levels can damage blood vessels, increase clotting risk, and promote arterial plaque buildup. Individuals with prediabetes should be screened regularly for stroke risk factors and take preventive measures such as smoking cessation, blood pressure control, and weight loss. Signs of stroke include sudden numbness, confusion, trouble speaking, or loss of coordination—and always require emergency care.
