15 Complications Linked To Prediabetes

Obstructive sleep apnea is more common in individuals with prediabetes, largely due to overlapping risk factors such as obesity and inflammation. Sleep apnea causes disrupted breathing during the night, leading to poor sleep quality and increased insulin resistance. Over time, untreated sleep apnea can worsen glucose control and raise cardiovascular risks. Symptoms include loud snoring, choking during sleep, and daytime fatigue. Sleep studies can confirm the diagnosis, and treatment often includes CPAP machines and weight loss programs to improve both sleep and metabolic health.

PCOS is not only a risk factor for prediabetes—it can also be worsened by it. Insulin resistance, common in both conditions, may increase androgen levels, intensifying symptoms such as acne, hair loss, and irregular periods. Women with both PCOS and prediabetes face a heightened risk of fertility issues and metabolic disorders. Managing insulin resistance through diet, exercise, and in some cases medications like metformin can improve both hormonal and glucose balance. Early screening is especially important in women of reproductive age.
