Common Foods That Could Be Worsening Your Acid Reflux

Beyond peppermint tea, be wary of mint-flavored supplements, throat lozenges, and vaping/smoking products. These items contain concentrated menthol , which is the volatile oil that provides that cooling sensation. Menthol is a powerful smooth muscle relaxant. When consumed or inhaled, it directly acts on the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES), causing it to relax or open prematurely. This immediate physical relaxation is often a guaranteed way for stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus, even if the base product (like a vitamin or throat lozenge) is otherwise non-acidic. Always opt for unflavored or ginger-flavored alternatives to protect the LES integrity.

68. Kiwi Fruit: The Bromelain and Actinidin Enzyme Attack

Kiwi fruit, despite its small size, can be a potent reflux trigger due to its unique combination of acidity and high levels of two strong proteolytic enzymes, bromelain and actinidin. These enzymes, which are excellent for tenderizing meat, are highly effective at breaking down proteins. When consumed, they can aggressively irritate the sensitive mucous membrane lining of the esophagus and mouth in individuals prone to reflux, causing a sharp, burning sensation that mimics heartburn, even if the actual stomach acid is low. Furthermore, kiwis are high in tiny seeds and fine hairs, which can linger in the throat, prolonging the irritation. For a gentler, more soothing fruit option, swap kiwi for low-acid, enzyme-free fruits like papaya or honeydew melon.
