Foods To Avoid For Optimal Kidney Health

Understanding Dialysis

Dialysis is a life-saving treatment for those with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) or acute kidney failure. It involves using a machine to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood, a task normally performed by healthy kidneys. There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis, which can be done in a clinic or at home and requires access to your bloodstream; and peritoneal dialysis, which is done at home through a catheter in your abdomen. The choice between them depends on various factors, including lifestyle, personal preference, and medical suitability. While dialysis is critical for survival in ESKD, it's also important to follow a kidney-friendly diet and medication regimen to improve the quality of life.
