Often marketed as healthy meal replacements or workout fuel, many energy bars and protein bars are highly processed and packed with ingredients that can be detrimental to kidney health. They frequently contain high levels of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus from ingredients like nuts, seeds, and various protein isolates. These bars also often include added sugars and sugar alcohols that can be difficult for the kidneys to process in large quantities.

While essential for health, excessive intake of vitamin C in supplement form (not from food) can be problematic. The body converts excess vitamin C into oxalate, a compound that can contribute to the formation of kidney stones. This risk is particularly high for individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions or a history of kidney stones.
