Anxiety might also cause a patient's blood pressure to increase. A chronic increase in blood pressure can cause the heart muscle to weaken and lead to coronary disease. In addition, anxiety has been associated with a decrease in the variability of the heart rate, which might increase the risk of death following a heart attack.
