The study included twelve healthy male participants who took a five-gram dose of sea buckthorn, with coconut oil, every day for four weeks. Following the wash-out period, sea buckthorn oil was found to lower rates of platelet aggregation induced by adenosine 5-diphosphate as well as maximum platelet aggregation. In a separate study from 2003, researchers isolated active substances in the plant called flavonoids. The substances were found to inhibit platelet aggregation induced by collagen. The study was done with mice monitored at a three hundred mcg/kg dosage of flavonoids.
